Dubrovnik - Croatia

  • Our main destination was the spectacular city of Dubrovnik. The old town is surrounded by walls and fortresses starting from the 12th C. Once an important port, it's been occupied or attacked by almost everyone in the region - Byzantine Empire, Venice, Hungarian-Croatian empire, Napoleon, Austrian Empire, Italy, Germany, and finally Yugoslav People's Army, where it sustained significant damage during the last war. Traces of the war have been almost wiped out and is reconstructed for the bus loads of tourists from cruise ships that swarm the city during the day. The 1.9km of stairs on the walk along the city walls was challenging. Until we saw the 90 year olds doing it, and were ashamed and vowed to start exercising more!
The city is stunning - from its sparkling marble streets, narrow streets and steep stairs to pebbly beaches and aqua-blue sea. Definitely a must-see!
